Hongshixia Valley was formed due to geological movements over the past 1 billion years, accompanied by multiple orogenic events and water erosion. Since 2.6 million years ago, the Hongshixia Valley has formed a zigzag shape due to surface water incision along two groups of fractures in the red quartz sandstones. Hongshixia Valley is approximately 1.5 km long, ranging from several meters to dozens of meters wide, and over 60 m deep. Due to the oxidation of iron-bearing minerals, the rock turned red, creating the stunning sights of red cliffs and clear water.
