As a result of regional structural stress, two sets of joints developed in the rock, nearly oriented in north-south and east-west directions. The rocks are cut into blocks of different sizes by these two sets of joints and the bedding of strata. The name is derived from the chessboard-like appearance of the joints on a bedding plane.
