The water flow or flood along  with Hongshixia carry large amount of sediments that form a vortex flow abrasive rotating the quartz sandstone at the bottom of the river bed. A kettle shape with round hole formed as time passes, they why it is called pothole. The long-term erosion of rivers and rise of mountain intermittently caused many step-like potholes in cliffs of Hongshixia, combining a pothole valley.
