The water flow or flood along the Hongshixia Valley carrys a large amount of sediments, which form a vortex flow that abrades and rotates the quartz sandstone at the bottom of the river bed. Over time, this process forms kettle-shaped potholes with round holes, hence their name. The long-term erosion of rivers and rise of mountain intermittently caused step-like potholes in cliffs of Hongshixia Valley, combining a pothole valley.
